The Closed Cycle Construction concept, which is unique in Europe, is aiming for a sustainable way of producing construction products and raw materials out of construction and demolition waste (C&D waste). The concept provides thermal processes for the disintegration of clean concrete and masonry rubble, enabling the recovery of the original constituents (clay bricks, gravel, sand and cement stone). These constituents can be reused as high-grade raw materials. Also the other, mixed fractions of C&D waste are treated and upgraded to high quality raw materials in the Closed Cycle Construction concept. Even the combustible fraction is usefully applied, namely as a fuel for the thermal processes. In this way material cycles are closed and land filling of C&D waste is prevented. With the success of Closed Cycle Construction, the construction sector will to a large extent be able to support itself, with regard to the supply of raw materials.
The project started in 2003 and came to a close in 2008. The partners in the project however will continue the effort to further develop the results of the project and will continue to meet regularly.
Closed Cycle Construction is expected to develop an important position to guarantee a continuous supply of C&D waste. Ecology, economy and technology will join hands, Closed Cycle Construction materials will find their way in the production of cement and concrete. European consultation on regulation that can contribute to the closing of the building cycle will be necessary.
